Caleb's First Poem

My Big Red Bed

I said, “Mom, I’m bringing Fred
In my big red bed.”

Then my mom made some bread
And I said,
“Can I eat my bread in my big red bed”

Then I woke up in my big red bed
And my mom toasts some more bread.

Then I asked Fred,
“Do you want to eat bread
in my big red bed?”

these are too cute?! what more could I really expect from an English Major's kids?! ;-) I still remember the painful torture of writing shakespearean sonnets, and haiku's! But, I treasure those times of stretching and little bursts of creative genius that only you knew I had! Can't wait to see what else your boys write.

Oh Libby, you're very creative! I'm glad that I have helped you tap into the right side of your brain! Have you written any poetry lately?

The boys are so funny. I didn't make them write these, they begged me to type them. I don't know how well you know my boys, but the poetry really does reflect each little guy's personality.

I haven't written much lately, unfortunately. I do find that I have been jotting ideas for a novel/book. I have the title (Cold Saturday Drive), and some ideas, but nothing solid. I have thought often about writing sort of a "this has been my life" biography-ish book, so we'll see. For that, I have the first page written, and nothing more. And I've been writing books for school--five or so pages, pictures, very few words. Fun though. I just wrote a Thanksgiving Story, complete with rhymes and cheesey characters--Fred the turkey who likes to sleep in bed. Cute, but not really profound! How about you?

Caleb, I love all the repetition of your rhyming words. I think it's funny that you chose Fred as a name. Your Papu uses that name a lot when he preaches.

Laurie, keep up the good work. These are precious! I'm so glad you're letting them dictate the poems. Physically handwriting can be such drudgery that kids associate writing with pain.

Have you bought any blank books w/ the hard covers that I mentioned? I treasure the all-too-few stories and poems my kids have written. I'll have to dig them up.

Zoanna, Caleb in particular likes writing. I am going to do more typing so they can dictate freely and use their imaginations. I have this nagging feeling that it isn't really "writing" unless they are the ones putting it on paper. However, they loved this. It wasn't school. Just fun. That is a great spring board for real writing, I think. They also loved seeing it published on their blog. Thanks for commenting on each of them. I will be sure to show them that other people read their stuff. They'll get a kick out of that!

Libby, I am pretty much using my blog to keep up with writing. I consider it communicating ideas more than real writing. But I am starting to do research on a woman named Narcissa Whitman. Her story is better than fiction, so if I ever get to spend time really researching, I would love to tell her story. (It might just end up snatches about her here and there on the blog...who knows)

You should write your book. Your dad would make a great editor for grammar. I'm sure he'd cringe if he read my writing. (Zoanna, you are kind not to correct my many errors!)

Lib, I love the title idea for your "book," keep writing! Laurie, Narcissa Whitman's story is amazing! I have a biography of hers in some sort of anothology of pioneer women stories or something like that. That would be awesome if you wrote something about her, since she's not well known.

I like the way you did your poem. I hope you will keep writing.
How's Fred? Did he like the bread in your big red bed?
    I love you!
